Gareth wins Sports Journalism Award

23rd February 2016

Gareth's Bradford City Fire Documentary has won in the Radio Sports Factual or Feature Programme Category at the prestigious British Sports Journalism Awards.

The programme was nominated in the same category as two BBC Radio 5Live documentaries (The Blind Faith & Cantona's Kung Fu Kick); Talksport's Concussion in Sport; BBC Radio Scotland's Ken Buchanan; and Pulse's Bradford City Fire programme.

"Valley Parade - The Bradford City Fire Remembered" was produced by Gareth and colleague Tim Daley to mark the 30th Anniversary of the tragedy. It told the story of that dreadful day, but also highlighted how British football; the two clubs involved; football stadia and media science has changed due to the Fire and the affects still felt 30 years on. The programme was broadcast on BBC Radio Leeds and BBC Radio 5Live.

"To win this Award is an incredible honour and huge surprise. Out of the 240 nominations on the night across the board, we were one of just three local broadcasters nominated. The rest were all major national outlets like BT Sport; Sky Sports; The Telegraph; ITV, etc. So just to be nominated was amazing; to win in a category with excellent programmes produced by Talksport, BBC Radio 5Live and BBC Scotland is a wonderful achievement," said Gareth.

"I must thank the SJA and the judges for this Award. I also must thank Tim Daley for crafting this documentary with me so beautifully and for everyone that contributed to our programme for what is still an emotional topic to talk about for so many."

"I hope this success reminds the industry and the public of what can be achieved in BBC Local Radio; the quality of output that is produced at a forward thinking station like BBC Radio Leeds; and how important local radio is to the British public."

In the 2014 SJA Awards BBC Radio Leeds' Tour De France coverage was highly commended in the Live Broadcast Category.
