Sport nominated for Gillard Award

18th September 2014

BBC Radio Leeds has been nominated in the sport category for the BBC Gillard Awards.

The station's superb build up to and coverage of the Tour De France Grand Depart weekend has been rewarded by being selected in the top three for the prestigious Award.

BBC Radio Leeds branded itself as “Your Station for the Tour de France” as the station spent a year building to up the wonderful weekend. The station covered every angle of the build up to and the Grand Depart itself. On the Tour week itself the station broadcast over 32 hours of live outside broadcasts.

It is the second time in three years, during Gareth Jones' time as Sports Editor, that BBC Radio Leeds has been nominated for the Gillard Sport Award.

Gareth and the team will be hoping to go two steps further this time and win Gold, after receiving Bronze for their coverage of Leeds boxer Nicola Adams' Olympic Gold medal in 2012.

Gareth said: "It's a wonderful achievement and honour just to be nominated for this Award. Our TDF coverage was an entire station team effort, with everyone playing a key part. So it's a great reward for everyone.

"We are up against another two very good entries, but hopefully we can earn Gold this year. If we did, it would be a great reward for a whole year of high standard broadcasting from everyone at BBC Radio Leeds."
