West Yorkshire Sport's Greatest Season

06th June 2017

As Sports Editor at BBC Radio Leeds, Gareth has just overseen, with his great team, arguably West Yorkshire's greatest football season.

Firstly it was the first season in eight years that Radio Leeds provided full commentary of every match for Huddersfield Town, Leeds United and Bradford City.

That's resulted in these incredible stats....Over 10 months the station provided 172 full commentaries; over 1,800 hours of live outside broadcasts on match days alone; 3 play-off finals; 2 club take overs; 2 manager exits and a promotion to the Premier League.

Secondly, it lead to three Play-Off Finals: Halifax Town were promoted back into the National League; then two trips to Wembley as Bradford City lost to Millwall sadly; but Huddersfield Town completed their remarkable fairy tale by being promoted to the Premier league.

On top of the football, Gareth also covered Yorkshire's Carnegie's fight for promotion in rugby union; as they ultimately lost in their two-legged play-off Final to London Irish.

"It has been an incredibly long and hard season, which has pushed our sports team to the limits, but it’s been worth it," said Gareth.

"I'm lucky to manage a great team, with very hard working, dedicated, talented and skilful individuals and that's what has got us through this season and why they deserve to cover so many success stories over the last 12 months."
