Sports Journalism Award Nomination

03rd March 2015

BBC Radio Leeds has been nominated in the Radio Live Broadcast Category at the highly prestigious Sports Journalism Awards.

Gareth and the station's team are nominated for their outstanding coverage of the Tour De France Grand Depart in July 2014. BBC Radio Leeds are the only non-Network Station to be nominated in this category, and only one of two Local Radio stations present in the whole Awards list.

Gareth and the team are up against five other entries, three of which are from BBC Radio 5Live and two from talkSPORT.

BBC Radio Leeds branded itself as “Your Station for the Tour de France” as the station spent a year building to up the wonderful weekend. The station covered every angle of the build up to and the Grand Depart itself. On the Tour week itself the station broadcast over 32 hours of live outside broadcasts.

BBC Radio Leeds won Silver at the BBC Gillard Awards in November for their Tour de France coverage.

"To be nominated at the Sports Journalism Association Awards is a huge surprise and incredible honour. The whole station put their heart and soul into our Tour de France output and it showed in the quality of our broadcast," said Gareth.

"To be the only local radio station in this category competing with the 'Big Boys' of 5live and talkSPORT, who have vastly superior resources and influence, is a testament to our hard work, planning and execution of broadcasting one of the World's biggest sports events."

Said Steven Downes, the SJA Secretary: “We congratulate all those who entered and have been short-listed, and look forward to welcoming many of those involved to the awards dinner next month.”

The winners will be announced at a dinner in London on Monday 23 March.
